UPKO Youth regrets gas pipeline project still on

KOTA KINABALU: UPKO Youth has expressed regret over the recent announcement by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi that the RM3 billion Petronas gas pipeline project between Kimanis, Sabah and Bintulu, Sarawak would go ahead.

"The stastement has coused us in UPKO Youth to lose our confidence in Pak Lah's leadership," said Youth Chief Arthur Sen yesterday.

"The Prime Minister announced to Sabah BN leader on May 31, 2008 that the project had been cancelled, but barely five months later he announced that it would go ahead," he said.

Arthur said such a stand clearly contradicted with Abdullah's integrity as the Prime Minister.

" Is this a legacy that Pak Lah wants to leave with the people of Sabah? It comes as no surprise therefore that he received a lot of criticism laterly even from UMNO itself," he said in a ststement.

Arthur said the agreement by the then State Government to accept only five percent royalty from the national petroleum company, Petronas, has been questioned by verious quarters in Sabah.

"We as the younfer generation in UPKO feel that a ministake was made by the previous State Government, and as it that in no enough, amajor pipeline system is now being installed in Sabah to cannel the gas from the State to aneighbourning State (Sarawak).

"We are unhappy because Sabah in on the losing end in terms of downstrem petroleum-based opportunities in the State. What are we going to tell our children in the future when they see the pipeline? he said.

Arthur said UPKO Youth would not compromise on its stand on this matterr and thus urged the Prime Minister to honour his promise by cancelling the project.

Abdullah said after opening the Parti Bersatu Sabah General Meeting here on Saturday that the petronas gas pipeline project is still on and would go ahead.

Meanwhile, UPKO Vice President Senator Maijol Mahap is also urging the Federal Government to reconsider proceeding with the gaspipeline project.

Maijol said Petronas should instead consider implementing some oil and gas developments in Sabah.

"We in UPKO would like the Goverment to reconsider its plans and feel that it is about time for Petronas to start a legacy in Sabah," he said and point our that even no-oil producing State like Melaka has Petronas-based developments.

He said Sabah in one of the biggest oil producing State in the country " and yet we don't hane anything to show. It as a far cry from what teranggganu and Sarawak have".

Maijol also said Sabah produces 11.6 tct of natural gas which is more the enough to supply a gas plant in the State and could be used to end the prsistent power supply problem in the State.

Petronas could instead use the RM1.5 billion allocated for the project to build an oil and gas plant in Sabah as well a gas pipeline from Kimanis to Tawau or Sandakan, he pointed out.

"Thefore, the State Government and the rakyat should make a stand on this," he said.

Dompok to raise gas pipeline issue with PM

By MAZWIN NIK ANIS

PUTRAJAYA: A Sabah Barisan Nasional component party is unhappy with the Federal Government’s decision to give Petronas the go-ahead to build a gas pipeline. Its president Tan Sri Bernard Dompok plans to bring this matter up with the Cabinet on Friday.

Dompok, who is United Pasok Momogun Kadazan Murut Organisation (Upko) president said the party is unhappy with the decision, claiming that a majority of Sabahans are unhappy too.

As he sits in at Cabinet meetings in his capacity as the Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department, Dompok said he would raise the issue with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi on Friday.

“I don’t see how the project will benefit Sabahans except for the landowners whose property are bought over to make way for the gas pipes.

“Sabah is an oil and gas producing state but there is no related activity whatsoever; there is no refinery, no university and no petro-chemical or other related industry.

“The industry is good for the state’s economy which is overly dependent on oil palm plantation and tourism. We need to be more diverse. Oil and gas is right before us and we should capitalise on it,” he told reporters Tuesday after launching the Education Services Commission website.

On Nov 1, Abdullah confirmed that the Petronas gas pipeline from Sabah to Sarawak would go on, despite an earlier decision to scrap it.The 500km pipeline from Kimanis to Bintulu, worth RM1.5bil is expected to be operational in 2011.

Asked if he would be getting support from the Sabah government to “fight” this issue, Dompok said: “There is no support from the state government. As for my colleagues from other parties in Sabah, they should know what to do.

“Even though this matter has been decided upon, I will still bring it up with the Cabinet again,” he said of the project.

Dompok: Scrap Petronas gas pipeline plan

By RUBEN SARIO

KOTA KINABALU: A Sabah Barisan Nasional component party wants the state government to insist that Petronas abandon a planned 480km pipeline to channel gas from Kimanis to Bintulu in Sarawak.

United Pasok Momogun Kadazan Murut Organisation (Upko) also wants an increase in oil royalties for Sabah and suggests that a hike of five percentage points, from the current 5% to 10%, was “doable”.

Upko president Tan Sri Bernard Dompok said the pipeline project should be stopped to encourage the downstream processing of gas pumped from offshore fields on Sabah’s west coast.

“We realise that the gas pumped from Sabah may be too little to develop a liquefied natural gas sector but there are other alternative industries such as urea and plastic manufacturing,” he told reporters after a seminar on the oil and gas industry organised by Upko Youth here on Monday.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi had reportedly told Sabah Barisan Nasional component party leaders at a meeting here on May 31 that the Petronas gas pipeline from Kimanis near here to Bintulu would be stopped.

On June 11, however, Petronas vice-president of gas business Wan Zulkiflee Wan Ariffin was quoted as saying that the RM390mil pipeline project would proceed and was due for completion by March 2011.

Dompok, who is a Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department, noted that Petronas appeared to be defying the Prime Minister.

He noted that unlike other states with oil and gas reserves, namely Sarawak and Terengganu, which had related industries, there was none in Sabah.

“The only thing Sabah has is the gas pipeline ending at Gayang in Tuaran and that too is for an independent power producer. It is understandable for Sabah to feel left out in this regard,” Dompok said.

On the petroleum royalty increase, he said his party was not objecting to the 20% requested by the Sabah Progressive Party but felt that 10% was more practical for now.

He said the five-point increase would be achievable if the Federal Government was willing to forego its share of the royalty as stipulated in the petroleum sharing agreement.

- Bernama
